Campaign sends over 4.500 e-mails

Poor Can't Pay supporters send 4,500 e-mails in two weeks

 26th September 2009

Supporters of 'The Poor Can't Pay' campaign have now sent over 4,500 e-mails to their local TDs, the Taoiseach, Minister for Finance and Ministers for Social Welfare.

"This level of support in the first two weeks of the campaign gives a real indication of how many Irish people feel that the most vulnerable must be protected during the economic crisis," said Mary Murphy spokesperson of the campaign. "The threat of serious cuts in income still hang over those who have the lowest level of income and we must redouble our efforts to ensure that our elected politicians understand the implications of looking for savings from the poorest in our society."

"Indications from the Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance that they will not act on the Commission of Taxation Reform recommendations creates the impression that there is no alternative but to cut welfare payments. We must insist that measures which will put the burden of the crisis on the shoulders of the relatively wealthy are on the table, and that the burden is carried by those who benefited from the boom."

The Poor Can't Pay will be posting some of the replies from TDs on the site in coming days.S
